This past week brought more snow
than Nashville has seen in years. The weather channel flooded the community’s
televisions with updates on the incoming storms, and quickly deteriorating road
conditions. In addition, temperatures dropped so low that 50-year-old records
were broken. The temperature even dropped to single digits a few nights,
closing down many of the businesses in the area in addition to metro and
Williamson County schools for six days.
The
winter wonderland that is so rare in our state was welcome at first. There is
no doubt that the children thoroughly enjoyed a few days off school. Not to
mention, not many people can remember the last time adults were actually able
to celebrate a snow day, even if it did consist of working from home in their
pajamas. However, after about three days of continuous snow and sleet, combined
with wind chills in the negatives the thrill began to die down. People started
to get stir crazy, no restaurants were operating, and cars were unmovable with
thick sheets of ice layering the windshields and hoods.
However, the worst of the Snowpocalypse
problems resulted from the immensely heavy layers of ice piling up on people’s
roofs. For instance, the Robinson’s live in a nice gated community near Brentwood
High School. Tim, Jackie and their daughter had been snowed in the house for
three days. Luckily Thursday came and the temperature increase and hours of
rain melted much of the ice on the main roads. The family did their best to
return to their normal routines. However, the nightmare began that night when Jackie
noticed that most of the clothing on her side of the closet was completely
soaking wet. She was utterly confused, as she certainly didn’t hang up wet
clothes from the washing machine. She called her husband, Tim and after an hour
of head scratching, they were unable to determine the source of the link, but
noticed that quite a bit of water was dripping from the wall above the clothes.
Within an hour the water coming from the wall looked more like a faucet, and
the family was afraid there would be permanent damage, and a lot of it if the
leak wasn’t stopped soon.
